Camping 101: Introduction

As with everything else, there are intensity levels within camping. You can go cheap or extravagant. You can go urban or remote. You can camp just to camp or it can be a vehicle for something else. Do your research and find out what works for you and your family.

Camping can be as simple as a tent and a campfire. There are campgrounds that are so basic that all they offer are a place to pitch your tent and maybe a pit toilet. These are usually very inexpensive places to stay!

On the other hand, you can rent or buy a camper that has more amenities than your own home: gas fireplace, plasma TV, Corian countertops, convection oven. Naturally, these motor homes can also cost more than a brick and mortar house.

Believe it or not, there is a campground right in the middle of urban Toronto, Canada. There are also sites around the country so remote that there are no roads leading to them. You have to hike in. With all your gear. And all your kids. I am sure these pristine campsites are breathtaking, but I have never seen one!

Why are you camping, after all? Are you simply passionate about dirt and fire, or do you want to visit a certain part of the country? Some campgrounds are in the vicinity of major tourist attractions. You can even camp near Disney World. Other campgrounds are a world of their own and there is no reason to go off site. They offer children’s programs, swimming, beaches, arcades, and even live entertainment.
